Bonsai Pot
Choosing the proper Bonsai
pot
As strange as it
may sound, selecting the correct pot for your Bonsai tree is almost as important as the actual selection of the
tree itself..
Growing a Bonsai tree takes a slightly different mindset than
growing most other specimens. Growers of Bonsais will normally have a very precise idea of what the tree will look
like after it matures. They will have either a mental picture or an actual printed concept of how the tree will
appear after the pruning, training and wiring of the tree have altered the tree.
An important component of this picture is the pot. Bonsai pots are available in a multitude of different sizes,
shapes, and finishes. Bonsai pots are either, round, square or rectangular. They come glazed and unglazed, and in
many different colors. The edge treatment is either very plain or very decorative. There is no definitive policy
that states that a particular Bosai tree must be grown in a specific pot, the choice of the pot is more of an
artistic decision.
Since the typical Bonsai tree will have a very shallow root structure, the typical bonsai pot is very shallow.
This is the one concept that remains true, regardless of the design pot one selects.
It often takes years of growing and training before a Bonsai tree will start to resemble the design concept of
the grower. During this period the Bonsai tree will be repotted several times, as the tree matures. Since it is
important to maintain the design concept over the life of the Bonsai tree, it is recommended that you purchase a
"set" of Bonsai pots, when your first select the pot for your tree. These sets, which are all the same design, just
larger in size, allow you maintain the design concept with each repotting.
